PostSubject: Difficulty With ATC   Fri Jan 02, 2009 2:57 pm

I've gone through all the training modules, but I'm still getting rather spotty results with ATC. First of all, I'm using the headset/mike that was sold with VoxATC and seems to be of good quality. I don't think that is an issue. I have never been sucessfull in getting IFR Clearance, but I can get results if, for example, ATC gives my a new heading, and I can acknowledge it by simply responding with my callsign.

ATC> Jetblue 22, turn right heading 130
MCE> Jetblue 22

This usually works, so I know that I can communicate with ATC. However if I am at KPIT (Pittsburgh) and want to get IFR clearance, I first tune the appropriate freq for clearance then I key the mike and say:

MCE> Pittsburgh clearance - Jetblue 22 request IFR clearance to Washington (or where ever)

or

MCE> Clearance, Jetblue 22 is ready to copy ATC to Washington

I've tried all the examples in the rtf DOC, but can't get response. I am curious how the software works for ATC. Does it simply listen for some pre-programmed syntex choices, such as what is listed in the rtf, then convert to proper choice number on the ATC menu? If I simply say "choose 1" it executes menu item 1 of the ATC screen. If that is the case, then saying exactly what is listed in the rtf would be required.

Anyway, I'll keep playing with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Flea,

I'll bet condor1 has some advice as he knows the program quite well.. What I have found is that I need to slow down when asking for clearance.. I also find the "option 1, 2 etc" very helpful if I don't get a response... I also find that the shorter versions of Clearance delivery requests outlined in the guide seem to work the best for me...

I know I am getting better at it as I have had a 100% flight that required a lot of ATC interaction... Know I know why Microsoft makes you change center and approach freqs a dozen times in two minutes for a reason! Laughing To get more practice!! LOL

Jeff

You may want to adjust the speech pace slider (available in General tab of the user interface) to your liking. This is poorly documented.
If you are kind of fast talker, move slider full left.
if you tend to speak slowly, try moving the slider to the right.
It's just a matter of finding what works best for you.

hope this helps.
